Facing Our Future #3: All Things Health
At the third session of our Facing Our Future series in August 2026, we met to discuss the effect of the climate emergency on health and what we can do in preparation for what is to come.
Here's what we did and discussed if you want to join in this process with us.
Introduction
What was the last healthy choice you made?
Reflection on your personal health
Draw a stick man or gingerbread man.
Reflect on what works well, what parts of your body you’re happy with, what aspects of your health you’re happy with (write or draw on your ‘man’ to indicate this). Spend a moment in gratitude.
Then consider which parts of your body are unwell/damaged/more fragile. What parts do you take medication for? Spend a moment in compassion. Use a different colour to indicate these responses on your drawing.
Finally focus on what you do to support your health and what parts of your body those activities help. Use a third colour to write these suggestions on your picture.
Discussion
In what ways does the climate affect health?
On 27 November 2025, Prof Hugh Montgomery talked about the effect of the climate on health as part of the National Emergency Briefing. You can hear his reflections here.
What do we need to be aware of?
How can we get/stay informed?
How can we practically prepare for what is to come?
How can we make our bodies and minds as healthy and resilient as possible?
Meditation
Arrive in the Body
- Breathe in slowly through your nose and out through your mouth.
- Notice the weight of your body where you sit and remind yourself: "This is the body I live in. Right here, I am alive."
Acknowledge the role of the climate in health
- Think about the living earth that sustains us: the air, water, and warmth of the sun.
- Allow yourself to notice any heavy feelings you carry about our changing planet: worry for your physical health or grief for nature.
- Do not push these feelings away but name them gently: "Fear is here. Grief is here. Care is here." Feeling this way is a sign of your deep love for life.
Become grounded
- With each inhale, imagine drawing strength up from the earth.
- With each exhale, let go of any tension.
- Whisper to yourself: "My heart cares deeply, and I am not alone in this care."
- Feel how your body is strong, resilient, and responsive.
Return to the Present
- Bring your awareness back to the room around you.
- When you are ready, gently open your eyes.
