The Circular Economy as a Catalyst for Sustainability

Sustainability has become more important than ever, and that is something that I value throughout everything I do. Having the chance to intern at Green Heart Collective has given me a new perspective on what sustainability really means. Over the summer I have not only gained real world experience, I have also completed my dissertation specifically analysing the conditions for viability of the CE, or circular economy, within fast fashion in the UK.

If you have never heard of the term before, circularity is keeping materials in use as long as possible, including textiles. A circular economy instead of a linear economy, or a 'take, make, waste' (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2024) cycle, could mean sustainable life for a current unsustainable future.

In order to be more circular, we can start by recycling, reusing, donating, or upcycling, which is what Green Heart does best! I have been on the sidelines watching Helen work her magic, and upcycling doesn't have to be boring! While interning, I have also been able to attend events like the Fashion First conference in Middlesborough, in which smaller businesses are participating in and advocating for ethical and sustainable practices such as AKS Prive and Shop by Shape.

Ethical businesses like this can help push us in the right direction. The conclusions of my findings from my dissertation for the conditions required for a circular economy include macroeconomic accessibility, in which the current economy and the cost of living crisis must improve prior to any changes. Next, circularity must be incorporated into the production process of fast fashion brands, and there should be supply chain transparency. Lastly and most importantly, stricter regulatory intervention is required to help brands move into more circularity, as well as a cultural shift specific to the UK.

Overall, all of these changes must happen at the same time instead of individually for a proper shift to occur.

Supporting ethical businesses like Green Heart Collective will contribute to this shift!
