Meet Niki, Founder of nykxCo

Meet Niki, Founder of nykxCo

It is fantastic to see so many small businesses that upcycle denim and other materials into something amazing. This week we caught up with Niki, founder of nykxCo.

Bucket hats have made a recent resurgence, and we love the idea of fashioning one out of recycled denim. This is just one of many unique items sold by Edinburgh-based nykxCo.

Niki, owner of nykxCo said:  "My designs are unique, using quality vintage fabrics, leftover and unwanted textiles to reimagine into beautiful handmade accessories."

Tell us about your background in fashion

"As head designer for Kangol I learnt the unique craft of hat making and for over 20 years I pushed creative boundaries in headwear, bags and watches to make Kangol the leading fashion brand you still see today."

Why did you start your store selling upcycled fashion?

"NykxCo reimagined was born in 2020 through my love of fashion and the environment."

"During the 90’s I saw firsthand the growth of ‘fast fashion’, driven by the consumer focusing on cost and not conception. I wanted to develop a brand that would change the unsustainable way we produce accessories and question how we use and dispose of our clothes and textiles!"

"When I started during the first lockdown there were no charity shops open but I was overwhelmed with local donations through Facebook marketplace.

"If there’s one good thing that that’s come out of the current crisis, it’s that people are coming together and creating conversations and change.

"I’m so excited about the interest that I’ve had in my accessories shop on Etsy and all the lovely customers that have commissioned custom orders.

"We’re all looking at where our ‘stuff’ is coming from, starting to buy less by choosing well, asking ourselves ‘do we really need it?’ and reusing what we have."
